News 2010
We are working on getting the best possible conditions for the race, which means with favourable wind conditions 3-4 days before the race, we will be able to start in Stockholm/Kungsängen and the finish will then be in Uppsala if the ice situation is good.
Vikingastafetten (relay)is new this year. Four pepole can share the race, there will be four distances; Skarholmen-Krusenberg, Krusenberg-Sigtuna, Sigtuna-Kungsängen and Kungsängen-finish. If the race starts in Kungsängen The four strecthes will be redefined.
What´s important
- Vikingarännet 80 km, Vikingaturen 50 km and "kortisen" 20 km, will run as soon as there is thick enough ice between Uppsala(Skarholmen) and Stockholm. We have two preliminary dates, 14th or 21st February 2010. The finish will be decided depending on the wind conditions 4-7 days before the race.
- You can read about the conditions of the ice on our home page. We can decide approx. 2 weeks ahead whitch weekend the race will be run. That decision is preliminary. 3-5 days before the race, we make the final decision whether it should go or not the following weekend.
- Skaters with or without pikes/poles will be separated.
- We will try to avoid running the race on the same dates as other skating races.
- How to get your number label you will be able to find on our home page.
- We recommend you to use public transport to the start in Uppsala and from the finish in Stockholm.
The public transport will provide extra rides and we will have special buses going from Cityterminalen in Stockholm. More information later. - The earlier you pay, the lower registration fee. Please use the facilities we provide for paying via internet.

Safety and Ice reports
Vikingarännet will carry out detailed supervision concerning the safety of the ice along the course. Primarily in order for snowploughs to be able to drive out on the ice, we have a rule-of-thumb that the ice should be at least 15 cm thick. If we do not need to use heavy snowploughs on the ice, and the ice is of such good quality that the safety is not affected, a smaller thickness may be permitted.
We do not check the safety of the ice outside the course. You take part at your own risk.
Up-to-date information about the ice, the land passages and other things will be available on our home page as soon as there is ice to report on.
Equipment
Ice prods are compulsory.
A backpack is not compulsory, but as the services are limited along the course we recommend you to take one. This makes it easier for you to take along drink, food and a change of clothes. Please see Services. Pikes/poles are allowed. Please use these carefully so not to cause any injury to other participants. If you use pikes/poles you start a bit later.
Insurance
If you sign a cancellation- and accident insurance with your registration, your registration fee will be repaid if an illness of accident occur and you can´t take part. The insurance costs is 110 SEK and is paid on top of the registration fee. If you can´t take part, please contact Folksam, +4687728740 or send an E-mail to folksam.sport@folksam.se. You must be able to produce a doctors certificate and also a receipt of the paid registration fee and insurance.
The Course
The course will be marked. If there is snow on the ice, you follow the ploughed track. Otherwise, the course will be marked with coloured canes. It is important that you keep to the marked course. It is only there that we can guarantee that the ice is safe. Officials from Vikingarännet will be on duty along the course.
Land passages (where it is necessary to go along the shore, e.g. to avoid weak ice)
You will have to take off your skates at Erikssund, Kungsängen and normally at Roparudden as well. If Vikingarännet runs closer to Stockholm than Hässelby, there will be a walk pass Hässelby Powerstation. There are also other places where a short walk over land can be necessary.
Major cracks (in Swedish "råkar")
The complication which it is most difficult to foresee in the ice conditions is the major cracks which can occur. Large variations in the temperature increase the risk of major cracks occurring. A special group of assistants from Vikingarännet will be supervising the pass-over places across these cracks. Please follow the instructions from these assistants.
Cut-off times
No skaters will be allowed to be on the course after dark. We shall therefore "put a rope across the track" at certain places. The places and times will be decided in connection with the choice of course. Transport will be available for the participants stopped at these cut-off points.
Services
Along the course we will have medical services, toilets and fluids available.
Please bring along your own food and drink. At the finish drinks will be provided. Please take along your own mug. We like to reduce the use of plastic mugs.
For further information please visit our home page.
Result and prizes
After the race, the result will be published on our home page.
Everybody who finishes Vikingarännet and Vikingaturen gets a plaquette. Other prizes will also be given out.

If we are forced to cancel.
You can follow the development on our home page or our administration phone 00 46 8 556 312 45.
